We often dream about making changes to our lives or creating something that’s bigger than ourselves, but not everyone takes the next step to make it happen.
13 women in Geelong have not only done just that but have documented their stories in a book, 13 Wise Women.
18 months in the making, the inspiration for the book came from Gail Mortimer, a local business owner, whose lifelong passion has been helping women believe in themselves and be empowered to take on their dreams. In choosing other business women to contribute to the book, Gail’s philosophy was simple.
“So often I see women who don’t follow their dreams due to all the usual reasons we give ourselves to stay exactly where we are. I wanted to show that anyone can step up, step out and give it a go. And it might not always go the way you planned, but you will at least grow and gain confidence from the experience”.
The stories are inspiring, full of courage, pearls of wisdom, and empowering quotes, as well as common sense. And there are a number of themes throughout the book, including getting out and taking action, continually learning, building your network, and staying true to your ‘why’.
The book has received great reviews from other Geelong women, including Bernadette Uzelac, from the Geelong Chamber of Commerce, Elaine Carbines from G21, and Maryanne Vagg, BAY FM Lifestyle’s Book Chick. The contributors are: Gail Mortimer, Michelle Winkle, Fiona Skene, Mandy Lovett, Mary Petherick, Belinda Lyle, Janina Lear, Liz Grant, Sharon Hill, Lisa Emanuel, Laura Potter, Lara Walsh, and Shayne Sullivan.
The book, 13 Wise Women, was launched on 5 October at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club in front of a crowd of 230 people, consisting of family, friends and local media.
Launch sponsors included: ABC Photo Signs, Australian Skin Face Body, BPW Geelong, Davidsons Accountants, Faggs Mitre 10, Geelong Connected Communities, Hayeswinckle, Louise King Funerals and Pam Hutchinson Photography.
